Use Chrome bookmark sync
Chrome bookmark sync is optional and off by default. When you enable it, EnsoLinks can keep supported Library bookmark URLs, titles, and folder paths aligned with Chrome's native bookmark tree. Chrome—not EnsoLinks—controls whether those Chrome bookmarks travel to other devices through your Google account. Sessions, live tabs, notes, tags, settings, search data, and recovery state do not join that sync.
Decide whether you need ongoing sync
Choose ongoing Chrome bookmark sync when both of these are true:
- you want supported EnsoLinks Library changes reflected in Chrome bookmarks; and
- you want supported Chrome bookmark changes reflected back in EnsoLinks.
Choose a one-time import or re-scan instead when you want to copy the current Chrome bookmark tree without leaving an ongoing connection enabled.
Enable Chrome bookmark sync
- Open EnsoLinks Settings.
- Choose Privacy.
- Find Chrome bookmark sync under "What can sync, only if you turn it on."
- Turn the setting on.
- Check that the status reads Bidirectional sync on.
Enabling this setting permits supported Library bookmark and folder writes to Chrome. It does not create an EnsoLinks account or upload a second copy to an EnsoLinks server.
If your current Chrome bookmarks are not yet in Library, use Import bookmarks and saved sessions or Settings → Data → Re-scan Chrome Bookmarks to bring them in through a reviewed, one-way action.
Know what can sync
The Chrome bookmark connection is limited to supported Library structure:
- bookmark URL;
- bookmark title;
- Library folder path.
Nested Library Collections can map to nested Chrome bookmark folders. Sessions are not Library folders and are excluded.
Cross-device transfer is a separate Chrome decision. It occurs only if Chrome account bookmark sync is active in your own Chrome settings.
Know what stays local
Chrome bookmark sync does not carry:
- Sessions or Session restore details;
- Open Tabs or current window state;
- pinned-tab or Chrome tab-group state;
- manual tags or notes;
- saved descriptions, keyword metadata, headings, or optional page snippets;
- EnsoLinks settings and import progress;
- Trash metadata;
- automatic browser-recovery state;
- Chrome History search results.
Export is separate too. Turning on Chrome bookmark sync does not create an EnsoLinks JSON backup.
Turn sync off
- Open Settings → Privacy.
- Turn Chrome bookmark sync off.
- Confirm that the status reads Local-only writes.
Turning sync off stops ongoing supported writes between EnsoLinks and Chrome. It does not remove bookmarks or folders that already exist in either place.
While sync is off, Settings → Data → Re-scan Chrome Bookmarks remains available as a one-way copy from Chrome into EnsoLinks.
Re-scan without enabling sync
Use re-scan when Chrome has changed but you want EnsoLinks to remain local-only:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Data.
- Select Re-scan Chrome Bookmarks.
- Review the explanation that the action pulls the latest Chrome bookmarks once.
- Start the re-scan and review the preserved, added, and removed counts.
Re-scan does not turn on ongoing sync.
If sync reports a problem
The status near the setting shows queued or failed Chrome bookmark work.
- If Chrome denies bookmark access, check EnsoLinks under Chrome's extension permissions and retry.
- If Chrome bookmark APIs or account sync are temporarily unavailable, reopen Chrome or retry later.
- If Chrome no longer has a mapped bookmark or folder, let EnsoLinks refresh its mapping before retrying.
- If Chrome rejects a destination folder, review the parent Collection and retry after the bookmark data refreshes.
EnsoLinks can retry recoverable Chrome writes, but this guide does not promise an automatic merge for every conflict. Review the Library and Chrome bookmark tree after a reported failure.
