Manage Open Tabs and windows
Open Tabs is a live view of Chrome. It is the right place to arrange what is open now or save part of that state before closing it. Moving or closing a tab here changes Chrome immediately. Saving a page to Library or a Session creates a stored copy and leaves the live tab open unless you explicitly choose to close it.
Understand the window groups
Open Tabs groups the current tabs under headings such as Window 1 and Window 2. The number beside each heading is the number of tabs in that Chrome window.
- Select a window heading to collapse or expand its rows. This only changes the EnsoLinks view.
- Select a tab row without a modifier to activate that tab and focus its Chrome window.
- Use Save window as session when you want to capture only that window.
- Use Close window only when you intend to close every tab in that Chrome window.
Select more than one live tab
- Hold Command on Mac or Ctrl on Windows/Linux and select a tab to add or remove it from the selection.
- Hold Shift and select another tab to select a continuous range from the last selection point.
- Check the selected count in the Open Tabs header.
- Choose an action for the selection: save the pages to a Collection, save the tabs as a Session, or close the selected tabs.
Pressing Delete or Backspace while a tab row has focus closes that live tab.
Move or reorder tabs
Drag a tab row to the position where you want it. Drop it:
- before another row to place it before that tab;
- on a window heading or empty part of a window group to append it to that window;
- in another window group to move it between Chrome windows.
If you drag one tab from a multi-selection, EnsoLinks moves the selected tabs together.
Close tabs and duplicates
Close one tab
Use the close action on its row. EnsoLinks asks Chrome to close that tab immediately.
Close selected tabs
- Select the tabs.
- Choose Close selected tabs.
EnsoLinks closes the selection immediately and reports if some tabs could not be closed.
Close duplicate tabs
When EnsoLinks detects repeated URLs, a banner shows the number of duplicate tabs.
- Review the repeated tabs if you need to keep a particular working state.
- Select Close Duplicates.
For each repeated URL, EnsoLinks keeps the most recently active tab and closes the others.
Save live pages to Library or a Session
Dragging a live tab onto a Library Collection or an existing Session stores a copy of the page in that destination. The live Chrome tab remains open.
To save several pages with a keyboard-accessible action:
- Select the tabs.
- Choose Save selected pages to collection.
- Choose a Library Collection or existing Session.
- Confirm the destination.
If that destination already contains the same page, EnsoLinks may skip the duplicate and report what happened. Saved copies can be undone when the completion message offers Undo.
Example: Drag three live reference tabs into "Client research." The three Chrome tabs stay where they are; their page references also appear in that Collection.
Save selected tabs as a Session
- Select the tabs you want.
- Choose Save selected tabs as session.
- Name the Session.
- Review the tab count.
- Leave Close tabs after saving session off to keep the live tabs, or turn it on to close them after saving.
- Select Save.
Selected tabs from different windows retain their window grouping in the saved Session.
Save one window or all windows
To save one window:
- Find its Window heading.
- Choose Save window as session.
- Name and save the Session.
To save the complete normal-window workspace:
- With no tabs selected, choose Save all windows as session in the Open Tabs header.
- Review the number of windows, tabs, pinned tabs, and tab groups in the preview.
- Name and save the Session.
In both cases, Close tabs after saving session starts off. Turn it on only when you want the successful save to be followed by closing those live tabs.
Some browser-internal or otherwise restricted URLs cannot be stored. EnsoLinks reports skipped tabs, save errors, and close errors separately so that a partial result is visible.
