Save and restore Sessions

A Session is an explicit, named snapshot of working tabs that you choose to save. Restoring it opens fresh Chrome windows and can recreate tab order, pinned state, and tab groups where Chrome allows. By default, Sessions do not expire automatically. Automatic browser recovery is different: it keeps one rolling local snapshot and offers only tabs missing after an unexpected restart.

Save a Session from Open Tabs

Choose the scope that matches the work you want to resume:

  • select tabs and choose Save selected tabs as session;
  • use Save window as session on a Window heading;
  • use Save all windows as session with no tabs selected.

Then:

  1. Review the preview counts for windows, tabs, pinned tabs, and tab groups.
  2. Give the Session a useful name.
  3. Decide whether to enable Close tabs after saving session.
  4. Select Save.

The close option starts off. With it off, the Session is saved and the live Chrome tabs remain open. With it on, EnsoLinks closes the successfully saved tabs after the save.

Restricted browser URLs can be skipped. Read the completion message for separate save, skip, and close errors.

Restore a whole Session

  1. In Workspace, choose the saved Session.
  2. Review its windows and tabs.
  3. Choose the action to open the Session.
  4. If a confirmation appears, check the window and tab count before continuing.

EnsoLinks opens each saved window group in a fresh Chrome window. It restores the saved ordering, pinned tabs, and Chrome tab-group title/color where the current browser supports them.

Sessions with more than one window or more than ten tabs require confirmation. A Session with more than twenty tabs also warns that opening it may slow Chrome.

Restore one saved window

When a Session contains several saved windows:

  1. Open the Session detail.
  2. Find the saved window you need.
  3. Choose Open window for that group.
  4. Confirm the tab count if prompted.

Only that saved group opens. The other saved windows remain in the Session.

Handle a partial restore

Some saved URLs may no longer be openable by an extension or may fail in Chrome.

If a restore is partial, EnsoLinks opens the tabs it can and lists the failed URLs. Use Copy failed URLs if you want a text copy for manual review. A partial restore does not silently report full success.

Choose how long Sessions are kept

Fresh installs use Never: EnsoLinks does not automatically delete named Sessions by age.

To opt into automatic expiry:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Data.
  3. Find Sessions auto-expire.
  4. Choose 7 days, 30 days, or 90 days.
  5. Review how many existing Sessions are already older than that lifetime.
  6. Confirm the change.

If you need the page references permanently but no longer need restorable window state, consider promoting the Session to Library before enabling a short lifetime.

Understand automatic browser recovery

Automatic browser recovery is not a normal Session:

  • it is enabled by default unless you turn it off;
  • it keeps one rolling snapshot on this device, not a list of named snapshots;
  • it covers normal Chrome windows and excludes incognito;
  • after restart, it compares the snapshot with current tabs and offers only missing tabs;
  • dismissing the recovery card does not turn the feature into a saved Session;
  • disabling it under Settings → Privacy deletes the recovery snapshot.

Use recovery for "Chrome reopened without everything." Use a named Session for "I want to return to this workspace later."

Promote a Session to Library only when layout no longer matters

Promoting a whole Session turns it into a permanent Library Collection. The page references remain, but Session-only restore data—windows, pinned state, and tab groups—is removed. The promotion cannot be undone.

If you only want one page in Library, save or move that page instead of promoting the whole Session.
