Import bookmarks and saved sessions

Import starts under Settings → Data → Import data. Choose the source, review what EnsoLinks found and where it will go, decide how Library duplicates should be handled, then start the import. A normal import copies data into EnsoLinks; it does not change Chrome or turn on Chrome bookmark sync.

Choose the right source

SourceWhat to provideDestinationWhat to expect
Chrome BookmarksDirect scanLibraryCopies the Chrome bookmark bar and folders. Chrome is unchanged and sync stays off.
HTMLBrowser bookmark .html or .htm exportLibraryFolders become Collections and subfolders stay nested.
TobyToby .json exportLibraryToby collections become Collections; saved titles, notes, and tags are imported when available.
OneTabOneTab .html, .htm, or .txt exportLibraryOneTab groups become Collections. A supported HTML export can preserve group names, dates, link titles, and order.
Session BuddySaved-collections .json exportWorkspace SessionsSaved collections become restorable Sessions. Library stays unchanged. History and backup/restore data are not supported.
EnsoLinks JSONEnsoLinks .json exportLibrary + WorkspaceRestores active Library data and live Workspace Sessions, including portable session window grouping.

Start an import

  1. Open EnsoLinks.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Data.
  4. Select Import data.
  5. Choose the source.
  6. For a file source, choose the export file from your device. For Chrome Bookmarks, continue with the direct scan.

EnsoLinks reads the selected file locally. Choosing a file does not upload it to EnsoLinks.

Review the preview before continuing

The preview states the source, destination, and number of Collections, Library bookmarks, Sessions, and Session tabs it found where applicable. It can also show imported notes or tags and counts for warnings, skipped items, duplicate URLs, unsupported fields, or unsupported links.

Before continuing:

  1. Check that the destination matches your intention. Session Buddy belongs in Workspace; the browser/Toby/OneTab sources belong in Library.
  2. Expand Warnings if the count is not zero.
  3. Check whether EnsoLinks skipped malformed, restricted, or unsupported items.
  4. Go back and choose a different file if the preview says no importable Library bookmarks or Workspace Sessions were found.

Choose how to handle duplicates

For Library imports, Skip duplicates starts selected. Duplicate matching applies to Library bookmarks; URLs inside imported Workspace Sessions remain intact.

For Session Buddy, identical saved Sessions are skipped automatically. URLs are deduplicated only within each imported Session, and existing Library bookmarks are not used to remove Session tabs.

If you want a second Library copy of a repeated URL, turn Skip duplicates off before starting the import.

Complete the import

  1. Continue from the preview to Import options.
  2. Confirm the duplicate choice.
  3. Start the import.
  4. Keep the EnsoLinks tab open while data is being saved.
  5. Review the completion counts and any failed or skipped items.

Imported Library pages become searchable when the local keyword index is ready. A temporary indexing message means the data is saved but search may use a slower fallback until indexing finishes.

For a Session Buddy import, use the completion action to view the new Workspace Sessions. For Library sources, open Library and choose a newly imported Collection.

If an import fails

  • Confirm that you selected the matching source. A Toby JSON file and a Session Buddy JSON file are not interchangeable.
  • Export saved collections or Sessions from Session Buddy; its History and Backup/Restore files are rejected.
  • If a Session Buddy file exceeds the displayed 16 MiB limit, create a smaller saved-collections export.
  • If only some items are unsupported, return to the preview and decide whether the valid remainder is still useful.
  • Re-export malformed source data from the original tool instead of editing a large file blindly.
