Export and restore EnsoLinks data
EnsoLinks offers two manual exports under Settings → Data → Export data. HTML is a browser-compatible file containing active Library bookmarks only. EnsoLinks JSON contains active Library data plus live Workspace Sessions. Neither format includes every local setting or recovery detail, and neither is an automatic backup.
Choose the format by what you need next
| Format | Includes | Best for | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser HTML | Active Library bookmarks and folder structure | Moving Library references to a browser or another bookmark tool | No Sessions; manual tags are off by default and use a non-standard description field when included |
| EnsoLinks JSON | Active Library data plus live Workspace Sessions and portable window grouping | Restoring supported EnsoLinks data into EnsoLinks | No local settings, Trash, internal search data, recovery snapshot, or machine-local window identifiers/state |
Export browser-compatible HTML
- Open EnsoLinks Settings.
- Choose Data.
- Select Export data.
- Choose HTML.
- Leave Include manual tags off for maximum browser compatibility, or turn it on if the destination can tolerate non-standard HTML descriptions.
- Review the estimated Library bookmark count and file size.
- Select Export and save the downloaded
.htmlfile.
The HTML export contains Library bookmarks only. It does not contain Sessions, live tabs, recovery state, or EnsoLinks settings.
Export EnsoLinks JSON
- Open Settings → Data → Export data.
- Choose JSON.
- Review the estimated Library bookmark, Workspace tab, and Session counts.
- Select Export and save the downloaded
.jsonfile.
EnsoLinks JSON includes active Library bookmarks and folder paths, supported bookmark metadata, pinned Library Collection descriptors, and live Workspace Sessions with portable tab restore data and window grouping.
It excludes:
- local-only settings;
- Trash and trashed subtrees;
- internal search index data and optional saved-page snippet index state;
- the automatic browser-recovery snapshot;
- machine-local Chrome window identifiers and state that cannot be carried safely to another browser instance.
Store an export deliberately
The download stays on the device or in the location you choose. EnsoLinks does not upload it.
An export can contain private URLs, titles, notes, tags, or saved page metadata. Treat the file like any other personal browser-data archive:
- choose a storage location you control;
- do not attach it to a public issue or message;
- replace older copies according to your own backup routine;
- create a fresh export after important Library or Session changes.
EnsoLinks does not schedule or rotate these files for you.
Import an EnsoLinks JSON export
- Open Settings → Data → Import data.
- Choose EnsoLinks JSON.
- Select your EnsoLinks JSON export file.
- Review the counts for Library bookmarks, Collections, Sessions, and Session tabs.
- Expand any warnings.
- Choose the Library duplicate option.
- Start the import and review completion.
Supported Library data returns to Library. Live exported Workspace Sessions return to Workspace with portable tab ordering and grouping where supported.
Import HTML into another browser
Use the destination browser's bookmark-import command and select the exported HTML file. The exact menu belongs to that browser and can change independently of EnsoLinks.
Only the Library bookmark structure is available in this format. To return Sessions to EnsoLinks, use EnsoLinks JSON instead.
Why this guide does not call either file a complete backup
A complete extension-state backup would have to restore every setting, transient state, deleted item, search structure, and machine-specific browser detail. These exports deliberately omit some of that state.
Use EnsoLinks JSON as a portable manual data export for supported Library and Workspace content. Use HTML as a Library portability format. Build any long-term backup routine around those boundaries.
